What is a Market Linked Debenture?

A Market Linked Debenture, commonly called an MLD, is a debt instrument whose return is linked, fully or partly, to a specified market-linked underlying or predefined conditions.

Unlike a conventional fixed-return instrument, the eventual payout can depend on how those predefined conditions play out.

Looking only at the headline return does not tell you enough about an MLD.

It is equally important to understand how the return is generated, the issuer, the conditions attached to the product, liquidity and the risks involved.

What we'll cover in the webinar

We'll take the jargon out of MLDs and look at the subject from an investor's point of view.

1

MLDs in simple language

What an MLD actually is, who issues one and how it differs from conventional debt investments.

2

How returns are structured

Understand how an index, market movement or predefined condition can affect the eventual payout.

3

Different market scenarios

See through illustrative situations how an MLD can behave when market conditions change.

4

Risks to understand

Credit risk, liquidity, product structure and market-linked conditions that investors should understand.

5

Portfolio diversification

Explore the potential role of MLDs within the broader discussion around asset allocation and portfolio construction.

6

Questions to ask

What should you understand about the issuer, maturity, payoff, liquidity and product conditions before considering an MLD?

Some questions we'll explore

  • If it is a debenture, why is it market linked?
  • What determines the eventual payout?
  • How is an MLD different from a conventional bond?
  • What happens when markets behave differently from what was expected?
  • What role does issuer credit risk play?
  • What should an investor evaluate before investing?

Who may find this useful?

If you already invest in mutual funds, equities, fixed deposits or bonds and would like to understand another investment structure, this session may be useful for you.

No prior knowledge of MLDs is required. We'll start with the basics.

Understanding comes before investing

The objective of the session isn't simply to label MLDs as good or bad. It is to help you understand how they work and know what questions to ask before making an investment decision.

Join us on 2nd September for this educational discussion.
